Which links
Anywhere you see a “Check price” button, or a product named as a recommendation on a gear page, assume it is an affiliate link. They are marked in the page code as sponsored links so search engines can tell too.
Links to state wildlife agencies, regulation PDFs, statutes and news sources are never affiliate links. Nothing on the state regulation pages earns me money for the regulation itself.
What it costs you
Nothing. The commission comes out of the retailer’s margin, not out of your pocket. The price is the same whether you use my link, type the product name into Amazon yourself, or buy it at a shop.
What it changes about what I recommend
This is the part worth being straight about, because it is the reason anyone should care.
Commission rates do not decide the running order. On a lot of the gear I recommend, the cheaper option pays me less and I recommend it anyway, because a reader who buys a $200 call on my say-so and finds it does the job is worth more to me than the extra few dollars on a $600 one.
I recommend things I have not been paid to recommend, and I have left products out that would have paid well. Where I have not tested something myself, I say so on the page instead of implying I have.
Nobody gets to buy a placement. If a brand advertises on this site, that is a separate arrangement and it is labeled as advertising where it appears. It does not get them into a gear roundup.
Advertising, which is a different thing
Some pages carry reserved advertising space. Where it is empty it shows a house placeholder offering the space. If it is ever filled by an ad network or a direct advertiser, that is paid advertising and is separate from the recommendations in the article.

Why the site works this way
Affiliate commission and advertising are what pay for the time that goes into the state regulation pages, which take days each and earn nothing directly.
If that trade bothers you, use the site anyway and buy your gear wherever you like. The information is free either way and always has been.
The legal part
This disclosure is made under the US Federal Trade Commission’s guidance on endorsements and testimonials, 16 CFR Part 255, which requires that a material connection between a publisher and a seller is disclosed clearly. It is also required by the Amazon Associates Operating Agreement.
